ABOUT SHADOW OPERA
Shadow Opera is a chamber opera group specializing in the performance of new and modern opera. Founded in 2010 by Tom Floyd and Deb Cohen the group have premiered all of Tom’s three operas (The Nightingale and The Rose (Cardiff, 2010), The Shadow of The Wave (Cardiff, 2011) and MICROmegas (Hammersmith, 2013)). Shadow Opera first presented The Nightingale and The Rose as part of ‘A Night of New Opera’ alongside Rebecca Clarke’s A Kind of Alaska, Stephen Benson’s Ariel and The Crow and Alexander Thacker’s A Winter’s Tale. Artists who regularly work with the group include David Spittle (writer), Victoria Male (designer) and Finn O'Brien (graphic designer) as well as a talented group of singers and instrumentalists.
In 2011 Shadow Opera performed a double-bill of The Nightingale and The Rose and The Shadow of The Wave in the newly built Richard Burton Theatre (RWCMD). These were the first operas to be performed in the exciting state of the art theatre. In 2012 the group were invited to take The Shadow of The Wave to the Tete a Tete Opera festival in Hammersmith. Shadow Opera performed for a second time at the Tete a Tete Festival in 2013 presenting the first act of Tom Floyd’s MICROmegas. Future projects include the complete two act version of MICROmegas and a production of Menotti’s The Medium.
